10. Safety & Scam Blueprint

Motorbike Insurance Pitfalls

Most common reason claims are denied: Lack of valid credentials.

  • You MUST hold a motorcycle license from your home country.
  • You MUST carry a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP).
  • 0.00% BAC: Zero blood alcohol tolerance. Riding invalidates claims.

Traffic & Pedestrian Rules

  • Traffic is fluid. Find an opening, step off curb, and walk at a steady pace. Never dash or step backward.
  • Yield to large trucks on highways. They use horns to warn you to move.
Emergency Numbers: 113 (Police) | 114 (Fire) | 115 (Ambulance)

The Scam-Avoidance Playbook

Hanoi: Shoe-Shine Trap

Touts squirt glue on your shoe, remove it forcefully, and demand 300k. Counter: Never let them touch your feet. Say “Không, cảm ơn” firmly.

Hanoi: Clone Hotel Taxi

Drivers claim your hostel “burned down” to take you to a kickback hotel. Counter: Ignore them, use app-based rides.

Da Nang: Live Seafood Swap

Rigged scales or substituting live shellfish for dead stock. Counter: Confirm total weight and final price on calculator before grilling.

HCMC: Rigged Turbo-Meter

Hidden accelerator spins taxi meter 4x faster. Counter: Only use Grab, Green SM, or queue for official Mai Linh/Vinasun.

HCMC: “Magic Wallet” Switch

Vendors drop your 500k note and hold up a blue 20k note claiming you underpaid. Counter: Keep small bills separate. State denomination out loud.

The Golden Rule: 3-Second Dismissal

Say “No, thank you” with direct eye contact, turn your body, and keep walking. Do not look at your phone.
